Words Of Wisdom

 "Powerful Words my Father Told me From A-Z," is a collection of popular verses, statements  or sayings known as proverbs. Many of the proverbs mentioned in this book were gleaned from Holy Scriptures, African , Jamaican, as well as from English cultures.

  The purpose of a proverb is to teach wisdom or a moral lesson. This is usually conveyed from one generation to the other by word of mouth similar to storytelling.  With modern technology they are  now being conveyed via the written word, the internet , audio, as well as via  audio visuals.

Even though proverbs originated from ancient time they continued to be coined. Many modern day proverbs are gleaned  from movies, stories, TV commercials, poetry, comedies and even modern inventions. The creation of proverbs is an ongoing process. It is said that hundreds  of the English proverbs were coined in the 20th century. Wise men of old pondered and crafted these wise sayings as well as local people . King Solomon the wisest man who lived wrote an entire book entitled, "Proverbs."

In Proverbs 1:1-8 (KJV), he described the purpose of a proverb.

"The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
To know wisdom and instruction;
 To perceive the words of understanding;
 To receive instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
 To give to subtlety, the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instructions.

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother."
